Her life at the Sanctuary Fall 2003 ~ October 26, 2011

Tarra and Bella’s devoted relationship warmed the hearts of everyone who heard their story. The unlikely duo of an elephant and a dog reminded each of us of the importance of loving one other, despite our differences.

Bella trusted Tarra so completely, she would let the giant elephant stroke her stomach with her foot and caress her with her trunk. Bella and Tarra found sanctuary together in the 2,200 acres of The Elephant Sanctuary; swimming in ponds, exploring new paths, and resting side by side in the sunshine. Bella, we will miss you and your infectious playfulness! We will continue your work, and take care of your friend Tarra.

The Bella Fund

The Elephant Sanctuary has established The Bella Fund—a memorial fund to honor Bella’s life here at The Sanctuary and her friendship with Tarra— a friendship which brought such joy and inspiration to people the world over.

Donations to The Bella Fund will be used to support both the ongoing care of our elephants as well as the care of strays, like Bella, who wander into Hohenwald seeking sanctuary and friendship. A portion of the proceeds will be used to support efforts of local humane associations and their efforts to care for strays in need of a permanent home.
