Shirley is Featured During May
Learn of Shirley’s fascinating history as a circus elephant who travelled from Nova Scotia to Cuba before entering a zoo and, finally, retired to The Elephant Sanctuary.

At 64, Shirley is a venerable elephant in the Sanctuary’s herd and is one of the oldest Asian elephants in captivity in the United States.

All of our Girls are retired from zoos and circuses where they lived their lives on exhibit to the public. To ensure minimal intrusion on the sanctity of their Sanctuary, the elephant habitat is not open to the public. The Elephant Sanctuary is, however, dedicated to educating the public about these amazing animals in our care.

The Welcome Center at 27 East Main Street, Hohenwald, TN 38462 is open to the public on Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and every third Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; other times are available by appointment during normal business hours. For more information, please call Lorenda Rochelle at 931-796-6500 ext. 105.
The staff and volunteers at the Welcome Center invite the public to stop by to learn more about our resident elephants through videos and slide presentations given by Sanctuary Staff. Scheduled staff presentations and topics are listed below. While at the Welcome Center, visitors may also access our network of 13 cameras (Elecam System) which are strategically placed throughout all three habitats, and enjoy live streaming video of the Girls in their natural environment without intruding on their Sanctuary. A photo exhibit featuring the Sanctuary residents is currently on display. A complete line of Sanctuary merchandise is also available for purchase at The Welcome Center, with the all of the net proceeds directly benefiting the elephants and their care.

The elephant habitat is not open to the public.

Sanctuary Much for your support!
