Visit The Elephant Sanctuary's Welcome Center this Summer for Caregiver Presentations

*The Elephant Sanctuary habitat is not open to the public*

All of our Girls are retired from zoos and circuses where they lived their lives on exhibit to the public. To ensure minimal intrusion on the sanctity of their Sanctuary, the elephant habitat is not open to the public. The Elephant Sanctuary is, however, dedicated to educating the public about these amazing animals in our care.

The staff and volunteers at the Welcome Center invite the public to stop by located 4 miles from the elephant habitat on Main Street in Hohenwald. The Welcome Center features:

  • Videos of our Girls and
  • Monthly Caregiver presentations
  • Photo exhibit featuring the Sanctuary residents
  • The Elephant Sanctuary Gift Shop offers a full line of our Sanctuary merchandise – all proceeds directly benefit the elephants in our care.

While at the Welcome Center, visitors may also access our network of 13 cameras (Elecam System) which are strategically placed throughout all three habitats, and enjoy live streaming video of the Girls in their natural environment without intruding on their Sanctuary. The staff and volunteers welcome everyone to visit and learn about our Girls and their lives in Sanctuary.

2:30 PM (*New TIME) Tarra and Bella ~ A Special Relationship

Tarra and Bella

Due to popular demand, for those of you weren't able to attend Remembering Bella Day on June 2nd, Caregivers will give encore presentations in July & August – Photo display is on exhibit in the Welcome Center throughout the Summer as well.

Tarra and Bella's devotion to one another warmed the hearts of everyone who heard their story. The unlikely duo of an elephant and a dog reminded each of us of the importance of loving one other, despite our differences. Bella trusted Tarra so completely, she would let the giant elephant stroke her stomach with her foot and caress her with her trunk. Bella and Tarra found sanctuary together in hundreds of acres of rolling hills, valleys, and streams of The Elephant Sanctuary; swimming in ponds, exploring new paths, and resting side by side in the sunshine. Get an intimate insight into the day to day interactions of Tarra and Bella.

Saturday, July 14 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM

The Welcome Center gift shop will be open to greet visitors to the Hohenwald Farmers & Flea Market located directly behind the Welcome Center, with a special presentation at 2:30 PM. For more information on the Hohenwald Farmers & Flea Market, email Jake: hohenwaldtreasures@yahoo.com

Girl Talk

"Girl Talk" explores the social bonding and relationships among our Girls. Elephants are social animals whose whole lives in the wild are spent with their matriarchal families. Come listen to the "conversations" among the big Girls in their habitats and observe their excited reunions after having been away from each other for short periods of the day. Enjoy hearing the ele-orchestration of "chirps and rumbles," along with "tenor sax, coronet, and tuba-like trumpets" of Minnie, Debbie, and Ronnie, or the unique bark of Tarra.
