Celebrating Vet Tech Week

This month, we have much to celebrate, including National Vet Tech Week from October 13-19! Veterinary technicians are essential to the daily operations of veterinary practices, playing crucial roles in preserving the health and welfare of animals. National Veterinary Technician Week provides an opportunity to recognize veterinary technicians’ contributions. First celebrated in 1993, it takes place in the third week of October each year.

At The Elephant Sanctuary, our veterinary technicians are integral to ensuring the well-being of our elephant residents. Their role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities and assist in various medical treatments, including:

  • Foot Care: Regular foot care is essential for the overall health of elephants, helping to prevent injuries and infections.
  • Dental Care: Dental health is critical for elephants, and our vet techs play a key role in monitoring and treating dental issues.
  • Weight Monitoring: Keeping track of an elephant’s weight helps us identify potential health concerns early.
  • Routine Annual Testing: Regular health assessments and screenings ensure that any issues are detected and addressed promptly.
  • Radiographic Monitoring: Our vet techs use imaging techniques to monitor chronic conditions, such as osteoarthritis, helping us provide the best possible care.
  • Laser Therapy and Pain Management: They assist with advanced therapies that alleviate pain and enhance recovery, ensuring our elephants lead comfortable lives.

We wish to recognize the work of The Sanctuary’s Lead Veterinary Technician and Veterinary Services Manager, Eileen K. Eileen has been a veterinary technician for over 20 years, and her expertise and dedication aid in providing the highest standard of care for the elephants at The Sanctuary. She has worked in a variety of settings, including a small rural hospital, a large emergency and specialty hospital in a major city, and now at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee for over seven years.

This National Vet Tech Week, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the veterinary technicians out there, for their unwavering commitment and compassion.
