Honor Elephants this Earth Day

Happy Earth Day! Elephants have roamed the Earth for millennia and have adapted to many diverse environments. The large floppy ears of African elephants help cool their bodies in hot climates, and the behavioral nuances of Asian elephants, from rumbles to full-on trumpets, facilitate communication in dense, forested habitats. Today around the globe, elephants face environmental constraints that place extraordinary pressure on this keystone species. Keystone species are critical to ensuring the world's ecosystems stay intact.

Recognizing the critical role of elephants in sustaining planet Earth, The Sanctuary prioritizes reducing waste and protecting our shared resources on a local level, too. On April 20 this past weekend, The Sanctuary hosted a community-wide clean-up effort in celebration of Earth Day. Neighbors and supporters of The Elephant Sanctuary gathered at The Sanctuary’s Elephant Discovery Center to pick up trash and recyclables in the community of Hohenwald, Tennessee. Their efforts resulted in 95 bags of trash being picked up and 80 tires collected for proper disposal.

A team of Sanctuary Staff also participated as an exhibitor in the Nashville Earth Day celebration, where we had the chance to meet hundreds of supporters and community members. We loved getting to speak with many of you about the 12 elephants who call The Sanctuary home and celebrate Earth Day with like-minded organizations across Middle Tennessee.

Contributing to The Elephant Sanctuary — through both volunteer service and financial gifts — ensures that we can, together, create a better world for elephants.

We invite you to join all of the Sanctuary supporters that invest in the future of these incredibly intelligent and versatile creatures, and we thank you.
