Artie's Move Across The Sanctuary

We are thrilled to announce that, after months of careful preparation, Artie has successfully made the journey to the newly constructed Bull Barns and Habitat, designed specifically for the needs of African male elephants.

The dedicated Care Staff worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth transition. They utilized a variety of training behaviors to guide Artie along the anticipated routes in his previous habitat, helping him become comfortable with the path he would take.

Sanctuary Staff who helped make Artie's move possible

On the big day, despite the rain making the ground extra muddy, Artie showed clear signs that he was ready for his move. The plan was for him to walk along a familiar route through the expansive 60-acres to Asia Habitat. There, the gates were opened to allow him to cross through Pond Yard and into the new transition habitat, which connects directly to the Bull Habitat. As he followed a carefully laid hay trail, he was treated to a feast of cantaloupe, watermelon, sweet potatoes, and alfalfa cubes, leading him right into the new bull barn without a hitch. Artie was given access to both barns so he could get to know his new home and was greeted there with even more of his preferred treats and extra enrichment items. The seamless coordination among Care Staff, Facilities, Safety, and the Vet Team demonstrated the true power of teamwork.

Once settled in, Artie wasted no time exploring his new surroundings. He eagerly browsed his habitat and discovered the perfect spot on a grassy hill for an overnight nap. The next day, Staff noticed that it didn’t take long for him to make his mark with a welcomed and natural behavior for African elephants — several trees were already downed as Artie used his strength to begin transforming his new space!

We are excited that Artie was able to transition so quickly, and we look forward to welcoming African male, Osh, from Oakland Zoo in the coming weeks, who will join Artie in their new home!
