Elephants on the Move
The Girls at The Sanctuary have been taking full advantage of the amazing weather we’ve had. Dulary and Misty have been taking regular swims; Debbie, Minnie, and Ronnie have been spending more time together (including a swim in Minnie’s Pond that we caught on camera), and everyone has been stretching their legs more.
Tarra and Shirley, in particular, have really been on the move. Caregiver Peter gave us this update recently:
“Shirley and Tarra have been traveling a lot. Saturday night, they were in a part of the habitat called ‘Right Field.’ After searching many different areas the following day and tracking them by graze marks, I found them at the extreme far end of Trout Run pasture. For the uninitiated, that's probably one and a half miles or more. There's a pond up there called "Hidden Pond" where Shirley will swim. They were still there at the end of the day, but the next morning they were gone. I could see where they crossed the creek bed. Shirley was in ‘Oak Tree Pasture' (probably about 3/4 of a mile, maybe more, and up a hill as well). She spent the day there.
I was able to track Tarra all the way out past Oak Tree Pasture, and then two thirds of the way up in ‘Secluded Meadow’ – that’s over 3 miles in one night!”
