African bulls Osh and Artie continue to expand their use of the newly opened 136-acre Woodland habitat shared area, located adjacent to the Buckeye and Hickory Barns.
Care Staff frequently observe the bulls choosing to explore some of the farthest reaches of the space independently and together. Designed to support greater movement and expanded social opportunities across connected habitats, Woodland continues to offer the bulls new pathways, resources, and experiences as they build familiarity with the larger habitat system.
During a recent stretch of warmer spring temperatures, Care Staff offered the bulls fruit punch-flavored enrichment popsicles designed to support hydration while encouraging natural foraging and exploratory behaviors. Filled with watermelon, pears, cantaloupe, oranges, and banana leaves suspended throughout, the enrichment offered each elephant an opportunity to engage with the treat in distinct ways. Osh quickly devoured his popsicle, while Artie took a slower approach — carefully crushing the frozen treat beneath his foot and eating the pieces one by one.
As summer approaches, Care Staff continue observing how both elephants choose to utilize the expanded habitat spaces, with each new exploration helping further build confidence and familiarity across the Woodland area.
