EleAmbassador Spotlight: Abby

Residents of the small town of Gibbon, MN have become accustomed to the sight of 15-year-old EleAmbassador Abby Willegal’s lemonade stand. Abby has set up her stand each summer for seven years now, quenching the thirst of her community and donating the proceeds to The Elephant Sanctuary. Abby uses the funds raised to adopt one or multiple of The Sanctuary’s resident elephants.“Picking the elephants is the hardest part,” she says.

In the interest of fairness, Abby now puts the names of all ten elephants into a hat and draws one at random. Abby’s lemonade stand has raised over $1,500 to date. In addition, Abby has arranged for The Sanctuary’s Education Team to do Distance Learning programs with her school and has also introduced her 4H club to our work.

“Abby is as dedicated to The Sanctuary elephants as anyone I know,” says Todd Montgomery, The Sanctuary’s Outreach Manager. As to Abby’s long-term goal of becoming an elephant caregiver…she is definitely off to a good start.

Volunteer EleAmbassadors donate their time, energy, and enthusiasm to raise awareness of the needs of elephants, staffing exhibit booths, making presentations to local school and community groups, organizing runs, hosting bake sales, and more!
