Field Trips at The Elephant Discovery Center

The Sanctuary’s Education Team has been very busy this season, hosting hundreds of students during exciting field trips to The Elephant Discovery Center in downtown Hohenwald, Tennessee.

Most notable, a group of second-grade students from our own Lewis County assisted in creating enrichment bags for the elephants during their recent visit. Each student wrote a personal note to a chosen elephant and filled the bags with spices, hay, popcorn, and Cheerios!

“We wanted to find a way to create connections between the students and the elephants and inspire empathy,” said Laura R., The Sanctuary’s Education Manager.

Care Staff allowed the elephants to explore the special gift bags carefully crafted by the students. The bags were placed around the habitat for the elephants to find and empty the contents; then the elephants munched on all the delicious snacks.
