Sustainability Spotlight: Local Tire Business Repurposing Tires

In addition to browse and tree donations from our community members, The Sanctuary finds ways to repurpose other donated items, like tires! Local business Hohenwald Tire has partnered with The Elephant Sanctuary for several years to collect used tires from their shop, which are transformed into enrichment and practical tools for the elephants.

Billie's tire wall for resting

These tires serve a variety of purposes: Care Staff have crafted items like “tire loungers” that provide a cozy resting option for Sissy, while Billie benefits from a carefully constructed tire wall to lean on in the barn. A motorcycle “tire swing” was created as a potential aid for Ronnie to help her stand up after lying down. Although she hasn’t needed it, Minnie and Debbie have turned it into a playful source of enrichment.

Tires are also often stuffed with hay and browse to mimic natural foraging behaviors and keep the elephants engaged. This creative use of tires provides opportunities for enrichment, comfort, and care, while simultaneously keeping tires of all sizes out of the landfill. We’re grateful to Hohenwald Tire for their support of the elephants!
